Gatun Lake
Gatun Lake is the best spot to witness the deep Panama jungles, wildlife and marine animals. This artificial lake is mostly popular for overnight stay, fishing and eco-cruise activities.
Gatun Lake, the largest man-made lake just after Lake Mead, which offers exciting tourist activities packed together. Once a tourist enters Panama, he could hear various unbelievable stories about fishing at Gatun Lake. One could view the large merchant ships operating through the canal and enjoy fishing. Bass fishing is the popular fishing activity in Panama, where one could enjoy peacock bass fishing. A naïve fisher catches 50 to 100 small fishes in this lake within few hours, hence this lake provides an opportunity to experiment fishing skills.
While creating this lake many nearby mountains became islands and now host some of the rarest species of fauna and flora. Ships passing through the Panama Canal have to mandatorily visit these islands. These mountain-islands are densely forested and provide excellent opportunity for bird watching and jungle trekking activities. Overnight camps in these jungles along with the wildlife, water and the ship sounds from the canal are the rarest adventure that one could experience.
Panama’s man-made wonder, the Gatun Lake and the Panama Canal draws majority of the Panama vacationers. Gatun Dam, the world’s largest dam, blocks the native Chagres River and forms this lake, which is the most important asset of the Panama Canal as it supplies water to the canal. Every time the ship passes through the canal lock, 53 million gallon water is released into the ocean. No pumps and no power but the force of gravity is used to fill the water back into the lake. The river maintains the water level 85 feet above the sea level. Gatun Lake acts as a water reserve and plays a huge role in the operation of the Panama Canal locks.
The white-sandy beaches, fishing, rainforest tour, basking in the scorching sun, artificially formed islands and the huge dam are the greatest attractions of Gatun Lake.
