Barro Colorado Island is located in the middle of the Panama Canal, in the man-made Gatun Lake. This piece of land became an island when the Chagres River was blocked to develop the water reserve.

STRI (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute) studies the rainforest ecosystems and has a permanent residence on the island.
